Poisonous by Morgan Songi

A Braided Essay

Australian adult Cane Toads are heavily-built amphibians with dry warty skin. They have a bony head and bony ridges that meet above the nose and eyes.  Large swellings – the parotoid glands – are located on each shoulder.  All stages of the Cane Toad’s life-cycle are poisonous. The venom produced by the parotoid glands acts principally on the heart.

The American Midwest is home to an especially virulent species of poisonous toad.  Small, warty, and armed with poison…they have short legs, stout bodies, and thick skins.

Vice President Dick Cheney and his goofy wife Lynne are Mr. and Mrs. Antichrist America.  If anybody now doubts whether God has cursed America with an irreversible curse, let him gaze upon the photo-op politically inspired picture, put out yesterday, of these two old fools who are holding dyke Daughter Mary’s newborn bastard son and pretending to like it.

The skin color of American toads can be red with light patches, olive, or gray. Their bellies are a white or yellow color.   They can live almost everywhere.

Their calls are frantic, loud, and constant.  These toads produce fluids whose poison is disgustingly harmful.  It can make people very sick.

The venom appears to ooze out of the glands, but toads can squirt a fine spray for a short distance and it may cause intense pain.  Poisoning causes symptoms that begin almost immediately.  Vomiting may persist for many hours.  The venom is toxic to humans, so it’s important to wash one’s hands carefully after coming into contact with any one of them.  The venom can cause blindness.

It is thought that Cane Toads can be excluded from garden ponds and dams by a 50 cm high barrier such as a thick hedge or a wire mesh fence.  But the main controls—in either Australia or in the US—on the spread of poisonous toads and their venom are public awareness and response.

Morgan Songi began writing, at the age of eleven, with a satirical poem about her mother’s driving.  She’s been told her poetry is “too tough” and her prose “too lyrical.”  Her ex-husband said she used words that were “too big.”  She’s an enrolled member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
